The Ethereum layer-2 landscape is about to get a serious upgrade. Optimism, the team behind the widely adopted OP Stack, is partnering with Flashbots, the infrastructure provider powering over 90% of Ethereum blocks, to revolutionize transaction processing.
Faster Transactions, Customizable Chains
This collaboration focuses on sequencing, the critical process determining transaction confirmation speed, prioritization, and cost. By integrating Flashbots’ technology, Optimism aims to bring near-instant confirmations and user-friendly transaction ordering to every chain within its so-called Superchain.
The Impact on the OP Stack Ecosystem
This is a big deal. The OP Stack underpins over 60% of all Ethereum layer-2 activity, supporting prominent chains like Base, Unichain, World Chain, Ink, and Soneium. Previously, advanced sequencing features like ultra-fast settlement and frontrunning protection were exclusive to resource-rich chains. Now, thanks to Flashbots, these features will be accessible to any project built on the OP Stack via readily available tools.
MEV and the Future of Sequencing
Flashbots has a strong track record in MEV (maximal extractable value) optimization, with its MEV-Boost tool reshaping block production on Ethereum. Some OP Stack chains already leverage Flashbots’ “Flashblocks” for sub-second block times, while others are experimenting with verifiable transaction ordering to ensure fairness and prevent frontrunning.

In the coming months, Optimism and Flashbots will extend these advancements to Optimism’s mainnet and other OP Stack chains.
